Claws for a Los Gatos Cause

4th annual lobster block party sells out, again

The fourth annual Claws for a Cause all-you-can-eat lobster block party, sponsored by C. B. Hannegan's and the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club, Sept. 6, was another spectacular sold-out event. This year, proceeds from some 1,500 paid tickets will benefit the Los Gatos Education Foundation, Morning Rotary Charitable Foundation, and the Los Gatos High School Marching Band. 8,000 pounds of Maine lobster participated in the event.

Greg Stowers, of Greg Stowers Architects, served as this year's party chairman. All 72 members of the Morning Rotary club participated in the event, according to LGMR member Mary Ellen Kaschub, along with 150 others representing the Marching Band and LGEF.

"We have so many wonderful volunteers," said LGMR member Mary MacDonald. "It's the first year I've been able to sit down."

For some it was all about the Maine lobsters

Fresh, live lobsters were flown to San Francisco from Boston, and driven to Los Gatos on beds of seaweed in special cooling containers, explains Kaschub. This year, the lobsters were served under a large tent to reduce time spent waiting in line. Tri-tip steak was also on the menu for non-lobster eaters.

"The Los Gatos Morning Rotary club has worked closely with C.B. Hannegan’s in an effort to streamline the food service at the event,” said Stowers. “Serving under a single large tent will let people get their food quickly and give them more time to enjoy with their friends, the great music and the outstanding lobster.”

"We are so excited that the LGHS marching band has been selected to receive funds from this year’s Claws for a Cause," said Carolyn Dufort, president of the LGHS Band Boosters. "Getting this support is huge for us. The money we recieve will allow us to buy much-needed instruments. Our band parents and students will be helping out at the event. I worked it last year and we had a marvelous time."

This year the Gold Star sponsors are: Good Samaritan Hospital; Sereno Realty Group; Lawrence Contract Furniture; Akeena Solar; Spa of Los Gatos; J.P. DiNapoli Companies; Travel Advisors of Los Gatos; and Greg Stowers Architects.

Morning Rotarian (and Planning Commission chair) Michael Kane was looking forward to serving lobster again this year, talking to voters as a candidate for town council--instead, he worked harder than ever.

"We are thrilled to be partnering again with LGEF to help raise money for our local schools, but we are also excited to add a new face to our event this year with the partnership with the Los Gatos High School Marching Band,” said event chair Stowers. “The mission of the Los Gatos Morning Rotary club has always been focused on the youth, arts and music in our community, and these two organizations fit into that mission perfectly.”
