"Pursuit of Beauty: New Figurative Abstractions" by Aptos artist Ursula O'Farrell, and "Asleep in America," a photographic essay by Peter Hobbs Digrazia, will open at the Art Museum of Los Gatos, 4 Tait Ave., Aug. 9. Both exhibits run until Oct. 13.
"Working from life, Ursula O'Farrell's pursuit of beauty begins with an open heart, ready to explore the inner workings of what lies within the human figure posed before her," wrote Museum Executive Director Stephanie Hatch. O'Farrell combines the emotional content of Expressionism with a contemporary palette that builds on the rich heritage of the figurative art movement that emerged here in the Bay Area in the 1950s.
Asleep in America
Peter Hobbs Digrazia's photographic essay "Asleep in America" is as much about being awake as it's about being asleep. The exhibit, 24 sepia-toned photographs, is a statement about the over-stimulation of our media-driven culture, and the toll it takes on citizen awareness.
"This isn't the country I grew up in," says Digrazia, who believes "we are deadened and numb. We're asleep as a nation." Digrazia's essay has political undertones. "When I saw the disinformation our leaders were perpetrating and the gullibility of the populace, I decided I had to do something."
"Asleep" is Digrazia's first solo show as an artist, after 30 years working in the advertising world.
Receptions and Events
The new exhibits will be welcomed with a public reception on Aug. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. Ursula O'Farrell will demonstrate oil painting and tour her art Sept. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m.
