Pacific Wines and Liquors Closing 5/31

Bargains at store closing sale

The Pacific Wines and Liquors store at 410 N. Santa Cruz Ave. is closing its doors for good May 31. Until then, a sign on the window promises "bargains galore."

Pacific Wines and Liquors is going out of business

"Hard liquor is the most inventoried," explains owner Harry Lulla. Therefore, it will be priced to sell. "Wine and beer, too."

Long-time residents see a disturbing trend that started with the ouster of the Last Call bar next to the liquor store last Feb. The building also houses Edna Ray Chinese restaurant and the Master Cuts barber shop.

Possible remodel of the center (rendering found on the Internet)

Pacific Wines and Liquor had a lease until 10/8/2008, unlike the barber or Edna Ray, who rent month-to-month. The Last Call's lease ran until Oct. 2009. So far, the owner of the Los Gatos Shopping Center has been quiet about his plans (and could not be reached to comment on this article). Something is up--the owner bought the remaining 16 months of Pacific Wines' lease.

Mr. Lulla has no plans to open another liquor store, at least not right away. "I plan to take a sabbatical," he says.
