Union Pacific Freight Train

Stalled Train Impacts Los Gatos Traffic

Winchester Blvd. cut off south of Hwy. 85

The Friday afternoon commute is expected to be congested due to a Union Pacific freight train that is blocking all lanes of Winchester Blvd. The 11-car freight train typically hauls gravel from the Stevens Creek Quarry in Cupertino to the frieght yards in San Jose.

The train's two engines technically "derailed" just after the front of the train crossed Winchester Blvd, between Courtside Club and Highway 85, blocking all lanes and causing the California Highway Patrol to close the Winchester Blvd. exit from Highway 85 until Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police officers, Park Services Officers, and DART volunteers could arrive to divert traffic leaving the freeway north. Other officers directed the snarl at Lark Ave. and Winchester Blvd.

In addition to the traffic problems, the crossing bell would not stop ringing, bringing nearby residents out to see if it could be turned off

Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Captain David Gravel told KCBS radio that the train might not be clear until 7 or 8 p.m.
