Homicide in Los Gatos

Man shot at upscale apartment complex

Update 6:24p: The victim is reportedly 25-year Los Gatan Mark Achille, former co-owner of Mtn. Charley's and the 180 Restaurant Restaurant and Lounge. His partner in those ventures, Sue Farwell, lives near the crime scene.

A white male adult was shot and killed Friday just before noon by an unknown assailant, reportedly a man dressed in all black. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene, near Apt. 35 at the Rancho de Los Gatos complex at 18400 Overlook Rd. Efforts to revive the man ended at approximately 12:05.

The first officer on the scene--possibly Corporal Dan Accardo--reported a "WMA down," a white male adult. This is an extremely rare pronouncement for the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Dept., which has not investigated a homicide in several years, as far as we know. The officer reported numerous shell casings around the victim.

The man was shot multiple times next to a carport in the center of the large condominium complex, near the pool. Eight gunshots were reported to police by two citizens at 11:40 a.m., according to Sgt. Randy Rimple, the designated Public Information Officer at the scene. Police are searching for a white or Hispanic male, approximately 5' 8" tall, wearing all black, including a black hat, and carrying a black shoulder bag. He was described as cleanshaven and may have been seen on Chestnut Ave.about a block away from the townhouse complex as early as 8 a.m. that morning.

Police told NBC11 that the victim carried no identification.

The BayMACS mutual aid system was activated as Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police received help from the Campbell and Sunnyvale Police Departments. Campbell officers helped search the area around Pennsylvania Ave., including Turnstile Lane and Fairview Plaza, and Sunnyvale Police sent a canine unit. Federal agents of the Dept. of Justice were also reportedly on scene. At about 2:30, the Campbell Police Mobile Operations Center arrived at the crime scene.

I am stunned to read this news. That is a very quiet, nice complex. I hope there will be witnesses stepping forward to help identify the murderer quickly. My condolences to the loved ones of the man killed.

It can't be. This just can't be happening. Mr. Achill was a kind person. Every time I went for a drink and for a good meal Achill would be there talking with the customers. Life won't be the same without him. I mean I can't even begin to take in what has happened. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family. To the person who killed Mr.Achill I hope you will be caught and sentenced to death. You have killed a member of our community who gives back and who enjoys adding to the social atmosphere. Mt. Charleys won't be the same.

I am crying right now because it seemed like yesterday when I stepped in to have a beer and a meal. RIP Mr.Achill you will be missed by the entire community. There is no justice for what has occurred.

It saddens me that greed or jealousy could be the underlying fact in this crime. When someone takes a life,it not only affects that person but family, friends and many people who knew Mark in day-to-day contact at Carrie Nations or Mountain Charlies. My hopes are for a speedy trial and consequences dealt out appropriatly. Andora Clark
