Los Gatos Brush Fire Quickly Contained

Remote hillside is tough to reach

A brush fire on a hillside just north of the Guadalupe landfill Sunday afternoon brought a massive response from County, San Jose, and Cal Fire units. A witness reportedly saw 15-foot-high flames.

The fire began around 3:30 Sunday afternoon and was initially called for Hicks Rd. and Shannon Rd., which is within the Town of Los Gatos. Excess equipment used the Los Gatos Christian Church parking lot for staging.

San Jose police evacuated the Guadalupe Landfill about an hour before the usual Sunday closing time and fire vehicles set up on the landfill access road to access the fire, which was just over the ridge. The fire threatened homes in the Via Campagna development which replaced the IBM research facility on Guadalupe Mines Rd.

Fixed-wing spotter aircraft circled as the Alma Helitack, based at Lexington Reservoir, dropped 200 gallons of water on the fire in pass after pass. Flames were not visible from the landfill side, and only moderate amounts of smoke could be seen.
