The Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department will begin stepped-up enforcement of laws requiring that all passengers in a vehicle, including the driver, wear a seat belt. The annual Click It or Ticket program runs from May 14 to June 3.

Officers will not issue warnings. Tickets for seat belt violations range from $80 to $91 for adults, but the penalty for un-buckled children under 6 is more severe. The parent or driver faces a fine of $330 to $401 for the first offense and a one-point count on their driving record. A second offense costs $795 to $971.

California currently has the fourth highest seat belt use rate in the nation. Since the campaign first began in California in 2005, nearly a million more motor vehicle occupants are buckling up. The LGMSPD will target adults and juveniles, because California's teen seat belt use rate was just 90.8% last year, well below the national rate. Overall, California's seat belt rate for 2006 was 93.4%.
