The LGSGSA Magic 10B All-Stars won the Santa Cruz Blast by the Bay
Good teams find a way to get it done, and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Magic 10B softball team showed just how good it was last weekend in Santa Cruz.
The Magic found itself down 5-0 to the Oakland Vipers in the third inning of the tournament semifinals. Rather than fold up their tents and head home, the Magic girls instead decided to buckle down and get it done.
Led by Korie Seandel, who was playing through intense knee pain caused by Osgood-Schlatter disease, the Magic crossed home plate 13 times in the third inning and held on for a 13-5 victory and trip to the championship game.
Rachel Davey got the rally going with a one-out walk, and Macie Manion followed with a nice push-bunt single down the first base line. Shea Gavin was hit by the pitch to load the bases, and suddenly the Magic was in business.
Power hitters Shelby Copper and Nikki Dal Cielo were pitched to carefully and walked, scoring two runs. Seandel then limped to the plate and, with two strikes, hit a soaring double over the shortstop?s head to tie the game. But the rally was just beginning.
The Magic nearly batted around twice in the inning, and Makenna Moore and Copper both had extra-base hits. Finally, the inning ended after 13 runs when Natasha Ramakrishnan hit a hard line drive to the shortstop.
The Magic, who were coming off a fifth-place finish in the ASA NorCal Championships two weeks earlier, now had to face the hot-charging San Jose Quicksilver, who finished sixth in NorCal and then followed that up with a third place finish in Vallejo.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings, the Magic bats again came to life. The local girls scored four in the third inning and never looked back, coasting to a 9-1 victory in the championship game.
Coach Mike Davey suggested to Seandel that she sit out the championship game, but despite being in such pain that she could barely run, she insisted that she play. And she again had a big hit along with Dal Cielo and Shelby, who each ripped triples.
Rachel Davey pitched a gem, giving up no earned runs. She was backed by a stellar defense with some great outfield catches by Carrington Ratcliff and Mary Jones. Copper ended the game with a nice unassisted double play.
