All five Los Gatos winter sports teams qualified for CCS action, with the girls soccer team receiving the top seed in the Division 2 soccer tournament.
It is the Central Coast Section sports championships, and the winter version kicked off last weekend with the CCS wrestling tournament. Basketball and soccer tournaments begin this week.
Los Gatos wrestling team place fourth in CCS action, with two wrestlers taking home third-place finishes. Dylan Johns lost his first match Friday but then roared to seven straight wins six by pin to claim the consolation championship. Scott Chessin took third at 135 pounds.
Andy Kreidle placed fifth at 130 pounds, and Omri Rahmil fifth at 140 pounds.
Girls Soccer
After finishing the regular season with a 15-0-5 overall record and 8-0-4 mark in league play, the Los Gatos High School girls soccer team was named the No. 1 seed in Division 2 play. The Cats received a first-round bye and will not play until Saturday.
Ranked No. 1 in the CCS, Los Gatos will play the winner of the Sobrato-Aptos game Saturday at 10 a.m. at Prospect High School.
While the good news is that Los Gatos is the top seed in the tournament, the not-so-good news is that three of the top four teams in the CCS rankings are playing in Division 2. Also in Division 2 are No. 2-ranked Presentation and No. 4-ranked Mitty.
Both the semifinals and finals are scheduled for Valley Christian High School. Semifinals will be played March 3 and March 4, with finals set for Saturday, March 6.
Boys Soccer
Los Gatos is the No. 5 seed in the Division 2 boys soccer tournament. That seed was good enough to warrant a home game in round one, but not good enough to warrant a first-round bye.
Los Gatos won the tough De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with a 7-2-3 league mark and 12-5-3 record overall. Los Gatos will host Pajaro Valley (7-6-3) Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. on Los Gatos lower field.
With a win, Los Gatos will play Saturday against No. 4 seed Yerba Buena Saturday at noon at Prospect High School.
The boys soccer semifinals and finals will be played at Gilroy High School. Semifinals will be played March 3 and March 4, with finals set for Saturday, March 6.
Sequoia (14-1-5) is the No. 1 seed, St. Francis (11-4-6) the No. 2 seed and Mountain View (13-4-3) the No. 3 seed.
Boys Basketball
After wrapping up an impressive 20-4 season and second-place finish in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL, the Los Gatos boys basketball team earned the No. 4 seed in the Division 2 basketball tournament and two byes.
The boys will not play until the quarterfinals, which are set for Saturday at Foothill College. No. 5 seed Westmont will play the winner of No. 12 Fremont and No. 13 Lincoln, with the winner of that game playing Los Gatos at 4:30 p.m.
Semifinals are set for Tuesday, March 2 at Foothill College, with the finals to be played at Santa Clara University on Friday, March 5 at 8:30 p.m.
In Division 2, St. Francis (25-2) is the No. 1 seed. Mitty (17-9) is the No. 2 seed, and Palo Alto (18-6) the No. 3 seed.
Girls Basketball
Despite a lofty 21-2 overall record and 12-0 mark in league play, the Los Gatos girls basketball team is the No. 8 seed in the Division 2 girls tournament.
The good news for Los Gatos is that they get a first-round bye and get to host the winner of the Los Altos-Aragon game Thursday at 7 p.m. in Helm Gym. The bad news is that the winner of that game gets to play No. 1 seed Mitty.
Semifinals of the girls Division 2 tournament will be played on Tuesday, March 2 at Oak Grove High School. Finals will be played Friday, March 5 at Santa Clara University at 6:30 p.m.
