Los Gatos captured its first girls' soccer championship since 2001
With two wins over Gunn this week to close out the regular season, Los Gatos completed an unbeaten 15-0-5 season and captured the tough De Anza division championship in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Ultimately, all that is undecided at this point is whether the Wildcats will be seeded No. 1 in Division I or Division II of the upcoming CCS Championships. The CCS tournament seeding meeting will be held Saturday.
Coach Jan Nordmos team needed two wins over Gunn to capture the league championship outright. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one for a tie. With an 8-0-4 league record, Los Gatos finished with 28 points, two more than Mountain View (8-2-2).
It was Los Gatos first girls soccer championship since 2001 when it won the El Camino division of the SCVAL. The last time Los Gatos won the De Anza division was way back in 1996.
Gunn came into the final two games this week with only one league victory, but the Titans did not roll over for the Cats.
Gunn did not want to cooperate with us, and they proved to be more of a challenge than we expected, said Nordmo. Ultimately, we did enough to get the wins and our team looks very solid going into CCS next week.
In the first game Tuesday, Los Gatos scored two goals each half and cruised home with a 4-0 win. Brianne Medved recorded her third hat-trick of the season. Taylor Comeau had a goal and an assist.
The first goal came when Comeau took a pass from Melissa Johns but was mugged inside the penalty box. Comeau was awarded a penalty kick, and she did not miss.
It was Comeau feeding Medved for the games second goal. Comeau and Medved were once again forces despite being double-teamed most of the game.
In the second half, Medved scored off an assist from Jaymi Werner, and then she scored again after receiving a pass from Hannah Rosenberg. Los Gatos outshot Gunn 11-4.
With an easy win Tuesday, the Cats had to figure it would be much of the same Wednesday. But this time, Los Gatos was playing on Gunns home field, and the confines were not quite as friendly.
The first half ended scoreless. Nordmo undoubtedly reminded his team at the intermission that it needed all three points to win the league title outright.
Comeau and Medved, despite being double-teamed once again, went to work in the last 40 minutes, with Comeau scoring twice off Medved assists.
But it wasnt just those two winning the games. Nordmo praised the play of Kelly Hoose, Chloe Mason and Emily San Juan, who he said anchored a solid defense in the last three matches.
Comeau Named League MVP
Coaches in the SCVAL met today to pick the All-League Teams, and Comeau was rewarded for her outstanding season by being named the leagues Most Valuable Player. The speedy junior finished the season with 20 goals and 10 assists.
