Michael Hodgman poured in 23 points in win over Fremont
The regular season will end this week for both the boys and girls basketball teams at Los Gatos High School, but both teams hope to keep playing for a couple more weeks.
The girls have wrapped up the El Camino Division championship in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic league, and the boys can take home second place in the tough De Anza division with a win over Wilcox Wednesday evening.
Girls Remain Unbeaten in League Play
Last week saw two more lopsided wins for the Los Gatos girls, who now sit with a 20-2 overall record and 11-0 mark in league play. The girls will close out play Tuesday at 7 p.m. when Santa Clara visits Helm Gym.
Dana Webster poured in 17 points and dominated the backboards as Los Gatos pounded Fremont 62-29 Friday night. The Wildcats roared to a 20-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Melissa Wilcox added 14 points as Los Gatos opened up leads of 39-15 at half and 54-25 after three quarters.
Erin Sweeney chipped in with eight points, and Deana Devlin and Courtney Mains added six points each. Ellie Moeller and Kelli Hashimoto scored four points each, and Jodie Lee two points.
Earlier in the week, the Cats routed Homestead 55-34 as Wilcox decided to light up the nets from beyond the three-point line. The senior guard poured in six three-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points.
Webster was right behind with 12 points, and the 6-foot-1 junior also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Lee scored seven points, Moeller six points, and Devlin blocked three shots.
Boys Just Cant Get By Homestead
For the second time this season, the Los Gatos boys basketball team lost to Homestead. The Mustangs are just 13-7 overall and 4-4 in league play, but they have the Cats number.
Both teams came out firing and scored 17 points each in the opening quarter. Los Gatos cooled off in the second period and trailed by seven at the half.
Homestead increased the lead to eight entering the final quarter, but the Cats got hot and almost pulled off the comeback, losing 65-64.
Michael Hodgman led the Cats attack with 18 points. Luke Politi and Dionte Cook added 11 points each, and Jeff Spagnola 10 points. Luke Hollander scored seven, Clayton Jubran four and Jared Huggins three.
Los Gatos improved its overall record to 19-4 and 8-3 in league play on Friday when the Cats routed Fremont 55-41. Hodgman led all scorers with 23 points, including four three-pointers.
Spagnola scored 13, Politi and Hollander six each, and Cook three. Justin Horillo had two points, and Jubran one.
The boys will close out the regular season Wednesday evening when Wilcox visits Helm Gym for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
Boys teams will advance to CCS tournament action beginning next week. Seedings will be announced on Sunday.
