Naveed Bagheri named Rocky Mountain conference wrestler of the week
Picking right up where he left off when he left Los Gatos High School, Naveed Bagheri is now making a name for himself on the San Francisco State wrestling mat.
The sophomore was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestler of the week the first week of February after going 6-0 for the week, winning the most outstanding wrestler at San Francisco State’s home tournament, the California Collegiate Open. He easily won the 133-pound weight class.
Bagheri posted three technical fall wins, added a major decision, and outscored his four opponents by a combined score of 63-4 en route to his second tournament title this season. He is ranked third in the latest Division II poll, and he earned All-America honors last year and was named RMAC Freshman of Year.
Bagheri opened the tournament with a 19-2 romp over Cal Baptists Jim Wilkins, followed by a 16-0 shutout against Martin Gonzalez from Division I Cal State Fullerton. He then won handily over unattached A.J. Jaramillo 16-1 in the semifinals before knocking off another D-1 wrestler, Brandan Rocha of Cal Poly, by a 12-4 count in the championship match.
In a pair of dual meets the previous day, Bagheri won by forfeit against Cal State Bakersfield before earning a 2-0 decision over Cal Baptists Chauncey Philipps, who entered the week with a No. 4 NAIA ranking.
Since a season-opening loss against Stanford, Bagheri has won 19 straight bouts, posting seven technical falls, four major decisions and one pin. He also tops the squad with 25 three-point near falls and 16 two-point near falls and ranks second with 197 total points.
At Los Gatos High School, Bagheri placed second in the Central Coast Section and finished fifth in the State tournament as a senior. As a junior he placed fourth in CCS and qualified for the state tournament.
