So far this season, only the rain can keep the Los Gatos girls’ soccer team from winning games.

Rain washed out Saturday’s scheduled game with Gunn High school. No makeup date has yet been announced.

On Thursday, Los Gatos broke its string of three straight ties by blanking Homestead 3-0. The Cats has little problem with the Mustangs in improving their record to 5-0-3 in De Anza League play and 12-0-4 overall.

Monta Vista currently leads the league with a 6-1-2 record and 13 points (two points for a win, one point for a tie). But the Matadors have played nine games while Los Gatos and Mountain View have played just eight games each.

Los Gatos and Mountain View are basically tied with 12 points each, the Wildcats at 5-0-3 and the Spartans at 6-1-1. Los Gatos and Mountain View both have games with Monta Vista remaining on their schedules, so it will all be decided on the field in the next two weeks.

Against Homestead, Megan Fee and Briane Medved helped keep the pressure on the Mustangs in the early going. The Cats finally got on the board in the 22nd minute when Mariah Cleveland split the Homestead back line and hit Taylor Comeau in full stride. As has become the norm this season, Comeau did not miss the opportunity to score.

Los Gatos scored again 11 minutes later when a kick was blocked near the edge of the penalty box, but the Mustang keeper was caught out of the net. A quick-thinking Katrina Voris immediately sent the ball back toward an awaiting Cleveland atop the 18 yard mark, from where she did not miss the net.

Los Gatos controlled the action for most of the second half, but the Mustangs did have one quality rush that was thwarted by keeper Ellen Czinski. Not only did Czinski make a nice save, but she quickly forwarded the ball to Medved, who spotted Amy Hudson on the run and sent a perfect pass her way. Hudson outraced the Monta Vista keeper and put in the final goal of the game.

Los Gatos Awards
The Wildcats have not only been excelling on the soccer field, they have been excelling in the classroom as well.

Coach Jan Nordmo announced that The Wildcats have received an award from the National Soccer Coaches of America Association for Academic Achievement in recognition for last year’s team, which sported a 3.78 GPA.

In addition, senior Kelly Hoose, team captain and center back, took part in National Signing day as she agreed to play at the University of San Francisco.
