Clayton Jubran fires away in win over Gunn

For the second time this season, Los Gatos’ varsity basketball teams pulled off the sweep against Los Altos.

With sole-possession of second place at stake, the boys bolted to an early lead and held on to beat the Eagles 55-51, while the girls improved to 9-0 in league play with a 41-32 victory.

The boys (7-2) trail Palo Alto by a half game. Los Gatos has three games remaining, with Palo Alto playing four.

Boys Win Two After Loss to Paly
Following last week’s tough 54-40 loss to Palo Alto, the Wildcats stormed past Gunn 50-26 before beating Los Altos Friday night.

After a sluggish start in which the Cats led only 6-5 after the first period, Los Gatos woke up and scored 16 second-quarter points to lead 22-12 at the half.

Jeff Spagnola led all scorers with 13 points, and Nick Lamson was right behind with 12. Michael Hodgman poured in nine, Dionte Cook eight, and Jared Huggins three.

It was a different kind of game against Los Altos, with Los Gatos scoring early and often en route to a 17-10 first quarter lead. The teams pretty much traded baskets the rest of the way.

Spagnola and Cook led the Los Gatos attack with 15 points each, and Hodgman added 11. Clayton Jubran scored eight and Luke Politi six.

Los Gatos plays twice next week, attempting to avenge an earlier loss to Homestead Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Los Gatos, and then traveling to Fremont Friday for a 7:45 p.m. tipoff. The Cats will close out the regular season the following Wednesday when Wilcox visits Helm Gym.

Girls Stay Unbeaten in League
The Los Gatos girls have clearly shown that they are the class of the El Camino Division, roaring to a 9-0 start in league play. Coach Xavier Cook’s team wrapped up a share of the league title Friday when it beat Los Altos, which is in second place at 6-3. Both teams have three games remaining.

While Los Gatos beat Los Altos for the second time Friday, it was not easy. The Eagles kept it close all night and trailed by only three entering the final period.

The Cats used a balanced scoring attack, with no one in double digits. Ashley Mains led the scoring with nine points, Mellisa Wilcox dropped in eight and Ellie Moeller six. Maddie Smedt, Dana Webster and Jodie Lee all scored five points, and Deana Devlin four.

While points were hard to come by Friday, they were coming rather easily earlier in the week in a 59-16 win over Milpitas. Los Gatos actually kept the Trojans off the scoreboard in the second period en route to a 27-5 halftime lead.

Webster led all scorers with 15 points and Wilcox was right behind with 14. Devlin scored nine points, Mains seven and Lee six. Moeller and Erin Seeeney had four points each.

The girls will wrap up league play with two games next week, hosting Homestead on Tuesday evening and traveling to Fremont Friday at 6:15 p.m. The Cats will close out league play on Tuesday, February 16 when Santa Clara visits Helm Gym.
