Ryan Kiel could be anchoring the Marshall University pitching staff this spring
College baseball teams across the country began official pre-season workouts Monday, and poised to lead the Marshall University pitching staff in 2010 is former Los Gatos High School left-hander Ryan Kiel.
Kiel tied for the staff lead in wins last year with four, making 18 appearances, seven as a starter. He currently ranks 11th in school history with 11 career victories at Marshall.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior posted a 4-3 record last year with a 6.15 ERA. He finished with a season-best 37 strikeouts in 41 innings and held right-handed batters to a .245 batting average. Kiel earned victories in first two starts to open the season against Old Dominion and Radford, striking out 11 in 10 innings in those first two games.
As a sophomore, Kiel appeared in 24 games, posting a 3-1 record and 4.50 ERA in 24 innings pitched, mostly in relief. He tossed 3.2 innings to pick up a win against North Carolina State, and he pitched three scoreless innings and notched a season-high three strikeouts against Southern Miss to earn another victory.
As a freshman, Kiel started seven games and struck out 27 batters in 39.1 innings. He recorded eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work at James Madison, and he surrendered just two runs on two hits in five innings in 9-3 win against Buffalo.
Nicknamed Miami after transferring to Los Gatos from Florida in his sophomore year of high school, Kiel was Honorable mention All-League at Los Gatos High School his senior year after helping the Wildcats win the De Anza Division championship and finish second in CCS. He and Kyle Blain combined on a 1-0 shutout of Capuchino in the quarterfinals of that CCS run.
