Monday night, the Los Gatos town council voted in a new mayor. The chosen one was Vice Mayor Dianne McNutt who had previously served as mayor from Nov. 2005 to Nov. 2006.

The short town council meeting raced through three agenda items without any discussion, approving past meeting minutes, a weed abatement program and the adoption of a resolution approving a final map for 300 Calle Marguerita. More than 120 people packed the council chambers to see whom the council would choose to replace Mayor Mike Wasserman.

Wasserman will remain on the council*. He has announced plans to run for the county board of supervisors. Every November, the council chooses a new mayor from among the five sitting members.

Wasserman was presented with a plaque of recognition for his work over the past year. This was followed by the presentation of slides from Wasserman’s tenure—set to the Black Eyed Pea’s “I Gotta Feeling.” (One or the other of those resulted in a standing ovation.) Wasserman then got a chance to talk about his tenure and the different things that he had accomplished during his year as mayor—including the building of a new police station, the acquisition of land for a new youth recreation facility and plans for a new library. After his second standing ovation he nominated his successor.

No one was surprised when he chose McNutt. And no one was surprised when McNutt nominated Joe Pirzynski for vice mayor, since he was her previous partner in Los Gatos governmental affairs. And as she said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

McNutt wasn’t surprised about the nomination either but said about her new appointment: “We have so many challenges and opportunities ahead of us, it’s exhilarating.”

Afterward the assembled citizens moved to the lobby to celebrate the new mayor and vice mayor with cake and beverages courtesy of the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce. And Wasserman had a bit of advice for his replacement: “Keep it rolling. We’re not out of the woods yet.
