Who knew that playing catch was a crime in Los Gatos? At yesterday’s Town Council meeting, a law still on the town books that prohibits people “to throw, catch, bat or in any manner play ball in any street or alley within the Town” was discussed.

The Town Council unanimously voted to initiate the process of repealing this law, which they consider outdated. The decision was made with little discussion, as all council members agreed that it’s healthy for kids to play ball in the street every once in a while.

“I don’t want anymore little felons on my street,” councilmember Barbara Spector said in a jokingly manner, to which Mayor Mike Wasserman retorted, “But what if they’re wearing Dodger caps?”

This ordinance will be officially voted on at the next Town Council meeting on September 7 for final adoption. When the law is officially repealed, a new law concerning ball play in town will become effective 30 days after the vote.

Other items on the last night’s Town Council agenda included accepting a report on Affordable Housing Strategy and accepting a staff report on an update from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Both items were quickly discussed with little debate among council members or community members. The town council unanimously voted to pursue new options for affordable housing production outlined in a staff report that’s available to the public on the city’s website.

In addition, the council members praised members of CERT and unanimously approved the formation of ad hoc sub-committee dedicated to developing and discussing public safety measures.

After the meeting adjourned at 8pm, several councilmember’s commented on how pleased they were the cooperation shown during the meeting.

“Boy, we can really show Sacramento a thing or two,” said Mayor Wasserman, referring to the council’s efficiency during the night’s meeting.
