The Los Gatos Library is encouraging children to challenge their minds and embark on reading adventures with the annual Summer Reading Program.
Through the program, children are asked to set their own reading goals and then record the books they read on an online website. Children who participate in the program can earn a new book from the library or a trip to the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. Teenage readers can receive a gift certificate to Borders Books and Music.
According to Heidi Long, the principal librarian of Los Gatos Library, the Summer Reading Program has become increasingly popular from year to year. In recent years there has been approximately 1,000-1,200 participants in the program each summer.
Its not something weve ever had to push. Kids are just inclined to read through the program, Long said. Its turned into a big thing.
Last year 17,000 books were read during the summer program. Library staff expect a boost in the number of books read this year, they predict the librarys summer events will heighten reading excitement.
The program will last until August 13 and will end with a summer reading carnival on that Thursday afternoon with face painting, food and live music. The excitement begins just by opening a book.
