Once upon a time, the Great Race was all about competition between the towns of Los Gatos and Saratoga. In order to participate, runners had to prove that they lived or worked in one of the two bergs (or neighboring Monte Sereno). This Sunday is the 32nd annual Great Race from Saratoga to Los Gatos, which is now a legendary free-for-all.
Back in the day, there were two starting guns: one in each town. Runners would jeer across Highway 9 as they passed each other headed in opposite directions. The town with the most participants was awarded the Glennon Cup. Now, Trophies are presented to the top three finishers various male and female age groups.
The race begins at 9am, with the starting line set up on the corner of Big Basin Way and Third Street in Saratoga. Registration for the four-mile race, sponsored by the Los Gatos Rotary Club, is $25 and can be done online at http://www.losgatosrotary.org.
